The Austrian bike manufacturer KTM has confirmed that they are working on a new 490cc twin-cylinder engine for the Duke, RC, and Adventure series of motorcycles. As per the sources, the company is developing a new engine in India as well. Stefan Pierer, the CEO of the company has confirmed that the company will be launching the new 490cc motorcycles in 2022.  Likely, the brand will first launch the KTM 490 Duke, followed by the KTM 490 Adventure and then, the KTM RC 490. Powering the faired supersport will be a 500cc parallel-twin liquid-cooled engine.

According to the available details, the new motorcycle will be positioned at the top of the Duke 390 and will use a similar platform to the company's Duke 790/890 models. We can expect the 490cc twin-cylinder engine to be capable of offering a maximum power ranging between 55HP-60HP. The engine will be further paired to 6-speed transmission mated to a slipper clutch. Like the KTM RC 390, the RC 490 is also expected to provide rugged ergonomics and sporty dynamics. KTM 490 Duke will possibly feature slight revisions to the bodywork. Features would include all-LED lighting and a colour-TFT instrument console similar to the KTM 390 Duke.

Speaking to the motoring world, Stefan Pierer, KTM Head said that the new platform is still under development. He further claims that the first product based on this platform with the new twin-cylinder powertrain will be introduced by 2022. The new platform will be used to develop streetfighter, adventure motorcycle, and fully-faired bike. Adding to it, Husqvarna will also launch new bikes on this platform. While the products are still under development, Pierer says he has not yet decided where the new 490cc range will be manufactured.

More details about the upcoming 490cc KTM motorcycles are expected to be revealed by the end of 2021. The KTM RC 490 is likely to be launched in mid-2022 and will compete against the Kawasaki Ninja 400, which is yet to be launched in the Nepalese market. Hence, the brand is now aiming to fill the huge gap between the Duke 390 and the 790 with an all-new motorcycle range.
