Last year, Yamaha Motor made their views on the ongoing sales pattern public by clearing the fact that they will need more new premium products to keep up with their target of selling 1.20 million units in India and Nepal by 2021. The brand is not so happy with the sales number of its 100-125cc motorcycles as most fans of Yamaha prefer going for bigger displacement options like the R15, FZS, MT-15, R3, and the FZ25. The Yamaha manufacturing plant will reach the maximum production capacity by 2021 with around 1.50 million units for both the Nepalese as well as offshore markets.

The scooter market is growing competitive with time and Yamaha is planning to introduce new and improved products to take on the market share that has been lost with no new product introduction in the premium 150cc scooter segment. Yamaha N-MAX and Aerox scooters are powered by the R15 V3-sourced 155cc engine, leaving the brand with the option of bringing the premium scooters that can take on the fans of Piaggio Vespa 150 series and the 150cc Aprilia scooters. However, Yamaha will place their 150cc premium scooters at a higher price point as including best-in-class and high-tech features will definitely demand a bigger price tag.

The breakdown of local sales of Yamaha Motor confirms that they wish to add a big chunk of buyers to their side and take the monthly sales figure to a higher 1 lakh unit mark in the coming months. The brand recently also launched 125cc Fascino and Ray ZR scooters. The most powerful way to drive the new generation of buyers is to launch new 150cc premium scooters while those looking for performance-centric bikes can wait for the MT-03 and the 2020 YZF-R3 sportbikes to enter the Nepalese market.

At present, the last-gen R3 is available in India and it will be available in Nepalese market in coming months. As far as the MT-03 is concerned, it will be priced around 6 to 8 lakhs. Both sportbikes are expected to launch in Nepal by the mid of this year. The MT-15 has once again proved that people love Yamaha streetfighters and premium pricing may not be an issue for many around the country. As per one of the recent updates, the brand is also planning to launch the much-talked-about XSR155 in the Nepalese market.

Yamaha may not take their 100cc and 125cc motorcycles further after the implementation of the BS6 emission norms in April this year, as the motorcycles are already not sitting at a profitable point for the brand. This also means that Yamaha could then place itself as a premium brand with just scooters available under 2 lakhs.
