Vehicle Insurance Faces Record Claims After GenZ Movement

Nepal’s insurance sector is facing an unprecedented rise in vehicle insurance claims following the GenZ Movement protests held on September 8 and 9. The violent demonstrations led to widespread vandalism and destruction of vehicles across major cities, triggering more than 2,206 motor insurance claims nationwide.

According to data from the Nepal Insurance Authority, these vehicle-related claims account for the majority of the Rs 23.22 billion total insurance demand filed across the country. Non-life insurers have already settled Rs 1.58 billion, helping affected motorists repair or replace their damaged vehicles.

Bagmati Province Leads in Vehicle Damage Claims

Vehicle damages were most severe in Bagmati Province, home to the nation’s busiest urban areas including Kathmandu Valley. The majority of vandalized and burned vehicles were located in this region, resulting in the highest number of motor insurance filings.

Other provinces reported moderate levels of claims, showing how urban density and vehicle concentration significantly influenced the scale of damage.

  • Bagmati Province – 1,669 claims

  • Koshi Province – 396 claims

  • Madhesh Province – 355 claims

  • Gandaki Province – 212 claims

  • Lumbini Province – 246 claims

  • Karnali Province – 22 claims

  • Sudurpashchim Province – 199 claims

The data highlights how cities like Kathmandu and Lalitpur, where motor traffic is highest, became focal points of vehicle loss during the protests.

Major Insurers Handle Heavy Motor Claim Load

Among the 18 active non-life insurance companies in Nepal, several firms have taken on a large share of vehicle insurance claims. These insurers are now processing payouts to customers whose cars, motorcycles, and commercial vehicles were damaged during the unrest.

  • Siddhartha Insurance Company Ltd handled claims worth Rs 5.61 billion and has paid Rs 594.4 million

  • The Oriental Insurance Company Ltd received claims of Rs 5.24 billion with Rs 570,000 disbursed so far

  • IGI Prudential Insurance Ltd processed Rs 2.75 billion in claims and released Rs 304.3 million

  • Shikhar Insurance Co Ltd handled Rs 2.40 billion in claims and paid Rs 319.4 million

These companies have worked under the direction of the Nepal Insurance Authority, which urged insurers to release advance settlements to speed up compensation for affected motorists.

Rapid Insurance Payouts Boost Public Confidence

The Nepal Insurance Authority has received praise for facilitating fast claim approvals and ensuring policyholders receive partial settlements without delay. Many insurers released advance payments before final verification, recognizing the urgency for individuals and businesses that rely on vehicles daily.

This quick action has restored public trust in the motor insurance system, which was tested by the large number of claims filed simultaneously across the nation.

Uninsured Vehicle Owners Bear the Full Loss

Despite widespread payouts, a large portion of vehicle owners—especially in rural areas and among public transport operators—remain uninsured. These owners have no financial backup to cover repair or replacement costs.

The event exposed a significant protection gap, strengthening the call for mandatory vehicle insurance for all categories of vehicles, including motorcycles, taxis, and buses.

Vehicle Insurance Proves Its Value in Times of Crisis

The GenZ Movement unrest has shown how essential vehicle insurance is in safeguarding personal and commercial assets. For thousands of affected motorists, insurance became a lifeline, covering damages ranging from minor repairs to complete vehicle losses.

The swift settlement of claims has positioned Nepal’s motor insurance industry as a critical pillar of financial security. It has also encouraged more vehicle owners to consider comprehensive coverage against unexpected events.

Conclusion

The GenZ Movement has pushed vehicle insurance claims in Nepal to record levels, revealing both the strengths and weaknesses of the sector. With 2,206 motor insurance claims already filed and payouts continuing, the incident underscores the importance of broader insurance coverage, faster claims processing, and stronger disaster preparedness.

As insurers and authorities continue to coordinate efforts, the crisis has become a turning point for Nepal’s vehicle insurance landscape, setting new standards for efficiency and public trust.
