Shoppers interested in a new motorbike are probably thinking about bike safety in this modern era. Airbags are one of the most important safety innovations of recent decades. Nowadays all vehicles are equipped with airbags. The airbags provide safety to the occupants of the vehicle and can reduce even 50% of passenger injuries in an accident. Recently, Autoliv and the Piaggio Group are collaborating to develop an airbag for two-wheelers to provide rider safety. Honda is also reportedly working on an airbag system, a patent of which has been filed recently.

To increase the safety quotient for motorcycle riders, the various automotive sector will now work together to develop the airbag for two-wheelers and potentially commercialize the concept. It can be fitted in commuter motorcycles and scooters, the airbag deploys vertically from the cockpit area of the two-wheeler, thereby saving the rider from severe injuries. The airbag can be stored in a small container that can be mounted around the headstock of the motorbike or scooter. Once the sensors have detected a collision, the airbag will deploy on both sides of the header when the compressed air inside is released.

The popularity of two-wheelers continues to rise in the Nepalese market. People find two-wheelers very practical and easy to use. Today scooters and motorcycles are equipped with advanced safety systems, such as ABS (Antilock Brake System) and ASR (Anti-Skid Regulation), and the addition of airbags will be one more step in the safe direction. However, the degree of safety that this configuration will provide depends on the type of collision. The airbag can also deploy due to a large impact caused by the front wheel falling into a large hole or ditch. One can find big holes or ditch mainly on the Nepalese road.

Mikael Bratt, CEO and president of Autoliv said "Autoliv is committed to our vision of Saving More Lives and providing world-class life-saving solutions for mobility and society.” “Therefore, we are developing products that specifically protect vulnerable road users. It is an integral part of our sustainability agenda and an important step towards our goal of saving 1,00,000 lives a year by 2030." It also remains to be seen when Honda introduces this system in its two-wheeler models. The airbags will be mounted on the vehicle frame and deployed in milliseconds that we will see very soon in Nepal.
